How long does a car battery last?

Batteries typically last 4-6 years. Batteries tend to degrade after time, losing efficiency and lowering its ability to retain charge. Most batteries come with a warranty that protects you from premature failure. Getting you battery checked every six months or before extreme cold climate conditions is always a clever idea.

When is it time to replace your vehicles battery?

There are sure signs that your battery needs replacing. Nothing worse than being late for work on a chilly morning only to get to your vehicle to realize the battery is dead. Also boosting your vehicle improperly and not having the know how is dangerous and a safety hazard. Your battery is the powerhouse of your vehicles electrical system. Your battery stores power from the alternator. A worn or old battery will fail to retain power and put additional stress on your alternator.

Here are some indications that your battery is at the end of its life or needs attention:

  • Slow cranking compared to usual operation.
  • Engine light on –low voltage codes
  • Lights are very dim
  • Car dies when left is accessory position for noticeably short periods of time
  • Battery terminals corroded
  • Battery is warped on the sides
  • Emitting a rotten egg smell
  • Car does not start in the morning and needs a boost
  • Alternator failing
  • Car cranks, clicks, and then does not start
  • More frequent jump starts

How to Boost your battery if needed properly

With modern vehicles it is no longer recommended to boost your battery using cables. Instead, most manufacturers recommend using a battery booster pack. They are very compact and easy to use. They are readily available and can be bought online on amazon and your local parts store. Proper attachment to your positive cable using the red cable and black to your negative cable is important. These packs also have protection for incorrect hook up.
