Here at Level Auto in Scarborough, Ontario, we double as an inspection station licensed by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). This means we can conduct safety inspections for all makes and models. The MTO safety inspection is required for all vehicles to meet the minimum required safety standards set in Ontario. After registration, you need to pass it to get a license plate for your car, truck, or SUV. Once you pass, you will receive an inspection certificate and an inspection sticker to place on your vehicle. The certificate outlines your vehicle’s health and the results of the inspection. There are different inspection variations depending on your vehicle. The four main are Structural, Safety Standard, Annual, and Semi-Annual; most everyday vehicles fall under Annual. A road test is performed, and all major systems are checked during the inspection, including the powertrain, suspension, brakes, electrical, tires and wheels, and steering. The tires and wheels are also inspected, along with the exterior.
When Do You Need a Safety Inspection?
Under the current guidelines, motor vehicles only need to undergo the MTO inspection when first registered or if the vehicle ownership changes. Exemptions may apply; commercial vehicles are subject to inspection every year. Your vehicle will also need to have an inspection performed if you register for a rideshare app such as Uber or Lyft. It is also required if you are registering in Ontario after residing in another province, if you are registering a rebuilt vehicle, or updating the status of a car from unfit to fit. If you have any questions about where your vehicle needs inspecting, please reach out to our team! We can confirm whether or not it is required. At Level Auto, we are professionally trained in performing the MTO safety inspection and follow the government-regulated inspection criteria. We take you and your vehicle’s safety seriously, which is why our inspection process is thorough and one of the best.
