What is a differential?
If your vehicle is equipped with all-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, it is likely that you have a differential (also known as a gearbox). Using a variety of gears, the differential works with the driveshaft to translate transmission rotation to the drive wheel.

How often does differential fluid need to changed?
It’s important to check your owner’s manual to see if you have a gearbox and, if so, when you need to have your differential oil changed. Most manufactures recommend changing the differential oil anywhere from 24,000 km – 46,000 km.
Why does differential fluid need to be changed?
As the differential oil ages, it can break down and become less effective. Old, broken down, or even leaking differential oil can damage the gears. Common problems associated with failing differential oil include gears that overheat and lockup or gear breakage.
What does differential fluid do?
Where there are gears, there is friction. Enter differential oil, it helps prevent that friction. Gears run together, and the harder they work the hotter they get. Differential oil lubricates the differential gears to reduce the friction they generate and, thereby, the heat.
