Differential gear oil works under extreme pressure and degrades with heat and mileage. Once it's broken down, the gears and bearings wear quickly — and a differential rebuild is expensive.
Vehicles that tow or carry weight need this more often than the standard interval suggests.
Common questions
How often should differential fluid be changed?
We recommend every 30,000 to 48,000 km, and sooner on vehicles that tow. Manufacturer schedules are often longer than that — check your manual for the figure written for your vehicle — but a differential works hard, lives under the car, and holds very little oil, so it is cheap insurance to change it early. Mention it to us if you tow a trailer or carry heavy loads regularly.
What are the signs of bad differential fluid?
A whine or howl that changes with speed, or a clunk on turns. Gear oil that has sheared down or picked up water loses its film strength, and the wear that follows is on gears that are expensive to replace.
Does my car have a differential?
Every vehicle has at least one. Front-wheel drive cars have theirs built into the transaxle, while rear-wheel drive and 4WD vehicles have a separate rear differential — and often a front one too — that takes its own fluid.
