What does the transfer case do?
On a 4WD or AWD vehicle it splits power between the front and rear axles. It runs its own fluid, separate from the transmission and the differentials, and it's the service most commonly missed on an all-wheel drive vehicle.
How often should transfer case fluid be changed?
We recommend every 30,000 to 48,000 km, and sooner if you tow or drive through deep water and snow. Manufacturer schedules vary and are often longer, so check your manual as well. It's a quick service that prevents a very expensive component failure.
What happens if it isn't changed?
Degraded fluid lets the chain and bearings wear, which starts as a hum or vibration at highway speed and ends as a rebuild or replacement. Contaminated or milky fluid also points to a failing seal, which we check while we're in there.
